Halifax Food Tour

<p>Halifax eats like a port city that never forgot where its food came from. This is the birthplace of the donair, spiced beef carved off the spit and folded into warm flatbread with a sweet garlic sauce you will find nowhere else. In 2015 the city made it official, and the donair became the only municipal food in Canada.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The harbour does the rest. Boats still land haddock, scallops, and lobster a short walk from the boardwalk, and you taste it in a bowl of chowder or a plate of fish cakes the way Nova Scotians have made them for generations. Newer arrivals have shaped the plate too, from a Syrian family's chocolate to African Nova Scotian kitchens cooking recipes carried through centuries.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Eat your way along Argyle Street and the waterfront and you understand Halifax quickly: salt air, deep roots, and a warm welcome at every counter.</p>

<p style="margin-left:0px;">Downtown Halifax sits on a slope between an old civic square and a working harbour, and the whole of it walks in an afternoon. We start at Grand Parade, laid out in 1749 between City Hall and St Paul's, and head downhill through the streets Haligonians eat in.</p><p style="margin-left:0px;">&nbsp;</p><p style="margin-left:0px;">You will taste the city's official food. Halifax invented the donair, and in 2015 the city made it the only municipal food in Canada. We take it as a donair poutine, so the spiced beef and the sweet garlic sauce land over fries in one forkful, at a downtown institution known as much for its warren of rooms as for its cooking.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Down at the water you sit in a pub open since 1974 inside a stone warehouse built for privateers. A cup of seafood chowder, then a plate of deep-fried pepperoni with honey mustard, which is the snack Haligonians order without thinking and most visitors walk straight past.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Your guide lives here. You get the argument over who makes the best donair, the reason one North End butcher supplies most of the deep-fried pepperoni in town, and an honest answer on where to eat after we finish. We keep groups small, so questions are welcome and the pace stays easy. We also take you somewhere we do not name in advance, a stop surprising guests every time.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>By the end you will have eaten across three centuries of Halifax, and you will leave with a list of places worth coming back to.</p>

What You'll Taste

<p style="margin-left:0px;">We built the route between Grand Parade and the harbour because the whole city reads in those few blocks. Grand Parade has been the town's meeting place since 1749, flanked by City Hall and by St Paul's, the oldest surviving building in Halifax. From there it is a short walk to Argyle Street, where the restaurants sit shoulder to shoulder, and down to a working harbour where fishing boats still tie up steps from where you eat.</p><p style="margin-left:0px;">&nbsp;</p><p style="margin-left:0px;">The same stretch holds the newer Halifax. A Syrian family's chocolate shop in a glass building on the water. A candy store on Barrington selling saltwater taffy by weight. Stone warehouses from the 1700s and 1800s, built for privateers, now full of counters and tables and live music seven nights a week.</p>
