This district is very representative of the evolution that the city has been going through for centuries.
First, with the settlement of the Knights Templars long ago. The great wealth they had acquired through gifts bestowed upon them by appreciative Christians enabled them to purchase vast estates and accelerate the process. One such estate was situated on the eastern edge of Paris, in Le Marais close to today's Hôtel de Ville, St-Paul & Temple, where a group of them settled in 1139.
Later, with the creation of "Hôtel Particuliers" as Le Marais was for long the aristocratic district of Paris, it hosts many outstanding buildings of historic and architectural importance. Once shabby, the district has been rehabilitated in the 70s and Le Marais is now one of Paris' main localities for art galleries. Following its rehabilitation, Le Marais has become a fashionable district, home to many trendy restaurants, fashion houses, and hip galleries

In the past, windmills, farming areas, and art studios were prominent features of the Montmartre landscape. Now the area is flourishing with first-class wine bars, fine-dining restaurants, and rare shops all adding to its appeal as one of the best and most unique food destinations in the world.
