What you'll do

SEE ITINERARY

A Bakery Working to Montreal Rules

Montreal bagels are their own thing: smaller, denser, sweeter, hand-rolled and boiled in honey water before baking. You'll eat one warm with house cream cheese, at a bakery open only a narrow window each day and known mostly by word of mouth. It sets the tone for the morning, because nothing about the building tells you what's happening inside

A Himalayan Dumpling Kitchen

Momo are the everyday dumpling of Nepal and Tibet, steamed to order and eaten with a tomato and chilli achar. You'll share a half-and-half platter, vegetable on one side and chicken on the other, so you taste both fillings against the same wrapper. Your guide will explain how this kitchen ended up on a 19th-century Ontario shopping street.

A South Indian Kitchen

Vada sambar is breakfast food across South India: a savoury lentil doughnut, fried crisp, then dropped into a hot lentil and vegetable broth sharp with tamarind. It arrives soaking up the sambar and needs eating straight away. The flavours land a long way from anything else on the route.

The Stop We Keep to Ourselves

We'll also take you somewhere we don't reveal in advance, a stop surprising guests every time. You'll find out where you're going when you get there, and what you're eating when it reaches you. It's the oldest trick we run and still the one guests write to us about.

An Olive Oil and Balsamic Tasting Room

A tasting room on Brock Street pours extra virgin olive oils and small-batch balsamics for comparison, and tasting two good oils next to each other is how most people learn what they've been missing. You'll try both, with bread, and pick up what to look for on a label. It's the one stop on the tour you'll use again in your own kitchen.

An Ice Cream Counter at the Water

A family-run counter has been making ice cream in-house here since 1986, and the queue outside on a July afternoon makes the case for us. You'll finish with a single scoop, a block from the harbour, City Hall and the market square. From here you're standing where the tour started making sense.

What's included in the Kingston Global Flavours Food Tour?

+

Six food stops across downtown Kingston, with a local guide for around three hours. You'll eat a Montreal-style bagel with house cream cheese, a half-and-half Himalayan momo platter, South Indian vada sambar, an olive oil and small-batch balsamic tasting, a single scoop of ice cream, and one more tasting at a stop we don't reveal in advance. Bottled water is included. Plan on the tour replacing lunch rather than topping it up.

Where does the Kingston food tour meet?

+

You can find the meeting spot here and if it's not clear you can always contact us.

In front of the Kingston Grand Theatre at 218 Princess Street, in the middle of downtown Kingston. It's a landmark building with a marquee, roughly a ten minute walk up from the waterfront, and your guide will be holding a Secret Food Tours sign. We finish on Ontario Street by Confederation Park and City Hall.

Your guide will be carrying an Orange umbrella so will be easy to spot.

Where the tour will end?

+

Near Confederation Park approximately 10 minute walk from starting location

How do you handle dietary requirements and allergies on the Kingston food tour?

+

Note your requirements when you book and our Kingston team will come back to you on what each kitchen on the route is able to do. We work with six independent downtown venues rather than one, so what's possible varies from stop to stop, and we'd rather check with each of them than promise you something on the day. Get in touch before booking if you have a severe allergy or coeliac disease.

I am traveling with my family, is the tour ok for infants/children?

+

Children are more than welcome on our tour and it's free for any child 2 years or under! We have had many families attend from all over the world and everyone enjoyed the tour.

I don't drink alcohol. Can I book your tour?

+

This is not a problem. Just inform our guide before the tour starts. During the tasting you can select another beverage you like.

Is there enough food during your tour?

+

We give enough food to all our customers. Trust us, you will not need to go to any restaurant after the Food tour!

Where do I add my discount voucher?

+

I would like to take your tour but it is already fully booked. Is there a way I can do the tour?

+

Our tours are often sold out very quickly. If the date you requested is not available, please do not hesitate to email us and we can see if there is anything we can do.

How long is the tour and how far do we walk?

+

About three hours, covering roughly 1.3 kilometres at a slow pace with six stops built in. Downtown Kingston is flat and compact, so the walking is gentle, though you're on your feet for most of the three hours.

How big are the groups?

+

Twelve guests maximum. Small groups are what let us bring you into kitchens with eight tables, and they're the reason your guide has time to answer questions properly.

I cannot find a way to print the confirmation. Is it OK if I have it on my phone?

+

You do not have to print your voucher. A confirmation on your phone will be fine!

If I purchase a voucher as a gift, or am given a voucher how long is it valid for?

+

All of our vouchers expire one year from the date of purchase.

Can I choose my own cheese and meat?

+

Our guide will take care of everything. Should you wish to try something special, please inform our guide and he will do his best to make you happy.

Where does your food come from?

+

Top - quality, fresh and local!

What if it rains or I change my plans?

+

Unfortunately, the weather is unpredictable. We do not issue refunds as per our terms and conditions.
We also inform you that we never cancel a booking even if we have only 2 people! However we do reserve the right to cancel the tour if we feel the weather is extreme, and we cannot run the tour due to this for more info see our Terms and Conditions.

The tour runs in most weather, since the stops are indoors and the walking between them is short. We'll only cancel for genuinely unsafe conditions, and you'll hear from us directly if that happens.

Can I pay the tour in cash?

+

You must book directly on our website. We do not accept cash payments. Our online payment is safe, secured and SSL protected.

Why do we need to pay for a booking fee?

+

The booking fee that you have to pay is up to our ticket provider and we can't change it. All our clients need to pay for it upon booking. The booking fee charged contributes to the cost of the ticketing system to provide an excellent service to our customers.

Foreign Transaction Fees

+

A few banks have charged their customer an extra fee while booking with us (this isn't the booking fee but another fee added by the bank). We think this is unfair, if this happens let us know by showing us in your bank statement and we will refund this fee as a gesture of good will.

Are the food tours wheelchair and/or stroller accessible?

+

Many of our tours are not wheelchair or stroller accessible. We recommend contacting us before booking to discuss this specific tour and accessibility options.

What is the lowest price guarantee?

+

We always offer the lowest price on our Secret Food Tours. If you find one of our food tours listed at a lower price, contact us and we'll match it.

Why is downtown Kingston worth a food tour?

+

Because the density is unusual and the signage is poor. Within six blocks you have four distinct food cultures operating out of 19th-century limestone buildings, several in premises giving away almost nothing from the street. Kingston also has the highest concentration of Feast On certified restaurants in Ontario, so the local supply chain is genuinely short.

Is this a good option for a first visit to Kingston?

+

It works well as a first morning. You cover Princess Street, Springer Market Square, City Hall and the harbour on foot while eating, which orients you for the rest of your stay, and your guide will point you toward what to do with the afternoon. Guests looking for things to do in Kingston tend to use this tour to work out where they want to come back to.
