Thai food rarely comes with Vegan-Friendly credentials. Even when it’s vegetables. But if you want a Vegan take and are longing for a taste of America, then, it’s got be Bonita.
Vegans visiting Bangkok will most likely already be aware of this cute little cafe hidden in the backstreets of the Silom area of Bangkok.
But if you aren’t aware/or aren’t Vegan/ or neither, Bonita is an American themed Vegan restaurant with a variety of menu options ranging from hot dogs (180 Baht) and pizza (270 Baht) to Japanese curries (200 Baht). $1 is around 30 Baht, €1 is about 35 Baht and £1 roughly 40 Baht
When you first open the menu, you’ll be met with the friendly face of Kintaro: So read item 6.
Unfortunately we didn’t have the pleasure of meeting any of the Bonita cats on the day which was a shame, but the warning, “Kintaro is dangerous, please stay away from him” meant it was probably for the best.
On this occasion we were travelling to Bonita for their renowned desserts. Bonita serves incredible whole wheat pancakes (110 Baht) and like many other dishes on their menu, you have the option to add a wide range of toppings including fresh fruit and chocolate syrup. For ours, we ordered some fresh banana, which went exceptionally well with the home-made almond butter and delicious coconut maple syrup the pancake already comes with. Here’s a picture to whet your appetite.
We also had the opportunity to try their Vegan Teriyaki burger (220 Baht) which was a pleasant surprise in terms of its rich and varied flavours. The nutty white sauce lathered over the salad, combined with the rich flavour of the teriyaki complimented the moist patty wonderfully. I’d like to thank the regulars sitting in the cafe for this excellent recommendation!
This local cafe has a wonderful homely feel and the owners are welcoming and friendly. K, one of the owners, is a passionate runner and even has several menu items named after him, which references the fact that he ran across America in 2015. I tried one of the these special items myself; the “K’s run across America Smoothie”.
The smoothie I ordered is one of 4 delicious options and this one included: oatmeal, apple, cinnamon powder, banana, soymilk, soy protein and ice. You will be able to taste each and every flavour in this scrumptious and filling beverage.
Bonita Cafe will be a great choice for meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans alike. Their focus on quality, excellent service and reasonable prices keeps customers coming back time and again. You won’t regret your next trip to this lovely cafe!
