Honey Salt is a true gem in the Summerlin neighbourhood, which is just west of the Las Vegas strip. And it's well worth the drive.
The eaterie is the first collaborative venture for renowned restaurateur Elizabeth Blau and her husband, award-winning Chef Kim Canteenwalla. They have an established relationship with farmers, fisherfolk and other food providers so they can provide the best products to create memorable meals.
Most dishes incorporate honey and salt. And this happens to be the self description of the two chefs' personalities! Sweet and saline - a combination that's rapidly moving up the charts!
Our table was served with a dish of crisps perfectly seasoned with a side of honey butter sprinkled with black lava Hawaiian salt. We ate al fresco on the patio to enjoy the early summer evening with a glass of rosé to accompany the setting sun (same colour?) and the meal.
I skipped the starters and went right for my favourite dish of sea scallops. This is in line with my rule for a first visit. When trying a new restaurant if they can’t prepare scallops correctly I never go back. I shall go back.
I opted for Caramelized Sea Scallops with cauliflower, vanilla bean, and truffle sauce.($33)
While not an A+ they certainly deserve an A rating. The scallops were cooked perfectly but lacked the full sear you would normally expect. My server was apologetic and offered to have them redone but they were so good I ate them as they were.
The scallops are normally served on a bed of cauliflower purée with charred cauliflower but I asked for a substitute of heirloom carrots instead and they were happy to accommodate.
Chef-driven, farm to table cuisine with an emphasis on locally and regionally sourced ingredients in an approachable and comfortable setting.
Most starters are from $10 to $15 while main courses are around $25 to $35. There is also a range of salads - around $15. (Europeans: Don't forget to add around 25% for taxes and service to these prices).
I am always happy to find local gems in a city not known for independent restaurants. Well worth the visit if your time allows.
