A perfect piece of the pizza

A few years ago, after many a recommendation from friends who live in Naples, we checked out the O'scià Pizzeria Napoletana’s branch in the 2ème arrondissement. Their endorsement - as natives of Naples - is the highest you can hope to get for a pizzeria. And my visit proved true to my friends’ exclamations of delight.

Their verdict, and I concur with this, was "fantastic pizza, though a little pricey", but worth it to have a taste of the authentic Neapolitan product in Paris.

So it was with excitement that I decided to book in at their other branch on Rue Le Peletier. Knowing that the pizzas were quite big, we skipped the starters and dived straight into the main course, also I knew it would be impossible for me not to order tiramisu afterwards so I decided it was best to save myself.

Between us we ordered the Tropea (€16), Capricciosa (€16) and Margherita (€11) and for myself the O'scià (€16) and two carafes of wine (€13 each). The service was somewhat questionable, especially seeing as one of my friends had to switch from French to Italian simply to understand what he was trying to explain, and not quite the jovial atmosphere I remembered from the other location.

Similarly the decor did not retain the same spirit and was instead rather lacklustre. So marking down for service and ambiance, what about the food?

Thankfully, though the restaurant and staff did not live up to my previous memories, the pizza did. Mine perhaps had less toppings than I expected for the namesake pizza and turned out to be quite simple with sliced aubergine, but was nevertheless delicious.

They say their secret is “savoir faire et passion” (know-how and passion). While the passion of the serving staff might be in question, that of the chefs seemed to fulfill this claim with much more enthusiasm. Everything is of course made from scratch and you are able to see them doing so in the open plan kitchen.

The tiramisu (€8) did not disappoint, and ended the meal on a high note. So, if you wantseriously good pizza and don’t mind paying a little more than the average takeaway, then I dorecommend O'scià, but I think if I went back I would go to the one on Rue Tiquetonne instead for the service and decor (hoping it is still as it was!)
